Book notes: Four takeaways from Tribes by Seth Godin (Part 1)

I'm currently listening to Tribes by Seth Godin on Audible. Although I haven't finished it yet, I couldn't resist sharing a few ideas and quotes that I found valuable for anyone who aspires to become a leader and make a difference in the world.

What is a tribe?

A tribe is a group of people connected to one another, connected to a leader, and connected to an idea.

A group needs only two things to be a tribe: a shared interest and a way to communicate.

You can't have a tribe without a leader, and you can't be a leader without a tribe.

Tribes have always existed because human beings need to belong. It's a survival mechanism. We need to connect with like-minded people, we are drawn to leaders and their ideas, and we can't resist something new.

Tribes used to be local and geography used to be important, but now the Internet eliminates geography. This means there are now more tribes, all kinds of tribes, small ones and big ones. We don't want to belong to only one tribe, but several. There's an explosion of new tools to connect and coordinate groups of people, and people will join new tribes as long as they're given the tools. However:

The real power of tribes has nothing to do with the Internet and everything to do with people. You don't need a keyboard to lead. You only need the desire to make something happen.

The opportunity

We live in a world with a great opportunity: there are tribes everywhere, yearning for leadership and connection. There are tools that allow to connect groups of people. Everyone is potentially a leader, anyone who wants to make an impact has the possibility to do so.

The power of this new era is simple: if you want to, need to, must lead, then you can. It's easier than ever and we need you.

Why we get stuck

Thousands of people walk around with great ideas, but what's missing is the will to make the ideas happen. Unfortunately, we still get stuck because we're afraid to challenge the status quo, we follow archaic rules, we act like managers or employees instead of the leaders we could become.

Leadership isn't difficult, but you've been trained for years to avoid it. I want to help you realize that you already have all the skills you need to make a huge difference. And I want to sell you on doing it. The best thing is that you don't need to wait until you've got exactly the right job or built the right organization or mover up three rungs of the corporate ladder. You can start right now.

Become a heretic

Heretics are the new leaders, the ones who challenge the status quo, who get out in front of their tribes, who create movements. The marketplace now embraces and rewards the heretics. It's clearly more fun to make the rules than to follow them. And for the first time, it's also profitable, powerful, and productive to do just that. This shift might be bigger than you think. Suddenly, heretics, troublemakers, and change agents aren't merely thorns in our side, they're the keys to our success. tribes give you leverage, and each of us has more leverage than ever before. I want you to think about the ramification of the new leverage. I'm hoping you'll see that the most profitable path is also the most reliable, the easiest, and the most fun. Maybe, just maybe, I'll be able to give you a push on the path to becoming a heretic yourself.
